Toner vs. Tonic—What’s the Difference & Which One Do You Need?

When it comes to building a clean skincare routine, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of steps and products. Toners, tonics, essences... they all sound similar, but they each serve a unique purpose.
This week, we're breaking down the difference between toner and tonic—two often-confused steps that can either clarify or calm your skin, depending on your needs.
What Is a Toner?

Toners have been around for decades and were originally designed to help remove excess oil and residue after cleansing. Traditional toners often contain astringents, like alcohol or witch hazel, that work to tighten pores, dry up excess oil, and rebalance the skin’s pH after cleansing.
Toners are best for:
Oily or acne-prone skin
Removing leftover makeup or cleanser residue
Minimizing the appearance of pores
Prepping skin for treatments
💡 Note: Many modern, clean toners are much gentler than the old-school alcohol-heavy formulas. Look for botanical-based ingredients and hydrating actives like rose water or chamomile.
What Is a Tonic?
A tonic is a more modern, nurturing alternative to a toner. It’s designed to hydrate, soothe, and nourish the skin, while still preparing it to absorb your serums and moisturizers more effectively.
Tonic formulas are often rich in antioxidants, plant extracts, and calming agents—making them perfect for those who want to restore balance without stripping the skin.
Tonics are best for:
Dry, sensitive, or mature skin
Hydrating and calming the skin
Supporting the skin barrier
Enhancing glow and softness

Toner or Tonic: Which One Should You Use?
It all depends on your skin type and goals:
If your skin is: Oily or acne-prone ➡️ Use a Toner (clarifying)
If your skin is: Dry or sensitive ➡️ Use a Tonic (hydrating)
If your skin is: Combo or normal ➡️ Use Either—or both, used strategically!
Jenn’s Tip: Don’t Overdo It
Using both a toner and tonic in the same routine isn’t usually necessary. Choose the one that works best for your skin, and stick with clean, non-toxic formulas that support your skin’s natural balance.
🌿 Bonus tip: Always apply toner or tonic with clean hands or a reusable cotton round—patting gently rather than rubbing harshly.
