What Your Labels Are Not Telling You

Why Reading Your Labels Might Be the Most Important Thing You Do for Your Health This Week

In honor of Women's Health Week, let's talk about something hiding in plain sight.

The Truth behind your skincare ingredients

I want to start by being honest with you. I am not fully non-toxic. I still get spray tans. I still get my nails done. I live a real life and I refuse to feel guilty about it.

But there are things I have learned along the way, things backed by my training as an integrative health practitioner, that I simply cannot unlearn. Things that changed the way I shop, the way I take care of my skin, and the way I show up for the women around me who are asking the same questions I used to ask.

Because here is the truth. The questions I hear most from women are not about exotic ingredients or complicated routines. They are about the basics. What is actually in this product? Is this safe? Why is my skin not responding? Why do I feel like something is off?

The answer almost always starts in the same place. Flipping the bottle over.

The Front of the Bottle Is Marketing. The Back Is the Truth.

Most of us were never taught to read an ingredient label. We were taught to trust the packaging. We buy based on promises printed in beautiful fonts on the front, words like "hydrating," "brightening," "clean," and "natural." But those words are largely unregulated. They do not have to mean anything.

The ingredient list on the back tells a very different story.

Here is one of the most important things I share with women who come to me with questions about their skin and their products: ingredients are listed in order of concentration. Whatever is first makes up the largest percentage of what is in that bottle. And for the majority of conventional skincare products, the first ingredient is water.

Water is a filler. It takes up space. It dilutes the active ingredients you actually paid for. And because water creates an environment where bacteria can grow, brands then have to add preservatives to keep the product stable. So you end up paying for water, plus the chemicals needed to keep the water safe, plus a fraction of the ingredient they advertised on the front.

That is the standard formula for most of what is sitting on your bathroom shelf right now. Even the expensive stuff. Even the stuff with the beautiful packaging and the long list of promises.

It is why I made the switch to waterless skincare through Oliveda. Every ingredient has a job. Nothing is there just to take up space. And the difference in how my skin has responded has been impossible to ignore.

Understanding the Rain Barrel Effect

the rain barrel effect

One of the concepts I come back to over and over again is what I call the rain barrel effect. Picture a barrel sitting outside in the rain. One drop does not fill it. But over time, drop by drop, it gets full. And once it overflows, everything spills.

Your body works the same way with the toxins and synthetic ingredients it encounters every day. And those sources are coming from more directions than most of us realize.

It is not just your skincare. It is your food too. Seed oils, excess sugar, ultra-processed ingredients, these are drops in the barrel as well. Every time the body has to work overtime to process something it was not designed to handle, that adds to the load. Your skin, your hormones, and your gut are all feeling the cumulative weight of it.

No single product and no single meal is going to be the thing that breaks you. But we are not using one product or eating one meal. We are using shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer, perfume, makeup, laundry detergent, and cleaning sprays every single day while also navigating a food environment that is full of ingredients working against us. Each one adds a drop. Each one is something your body has to process and manage.

When that barrel gets full it shows up in your body. Hormonal imbalances. Skin flare-ups. Fatigue. Brain fog. Gut issues. These are not random. They are your body signaling that it has hit its limit.

The goal is not perfection. I am living proof of that. The goal is simply to lower the water level so your body has room to function the way it was designed to.

That is why label reading matters. Not because one product will derail your health, but because hundreds of products over years quietly fill that barrel in ways we may not connect until something goes wrong.

Your Gut and Your Skin Are in Constant Conversation

This is something I am deeply passionate about and one of the most common things women miss when they are trying to figure out why their skin is not cooperating.

Your gut and your skin are connected. These two systems are in constant conversation, and when one is struggling the other almost always shows it.

When the gut is inflamed or out of balance it cannot properly filter what the body is taking in. Those things have to go somewhere. And often they surface through the skin as acne, redness, dullness, premature aging, and flare-ups that no topical product can fully fix on its own.

This is why I always say you cannot out-serum a struggling gut. The most thoughtfully formulated skincare in the world will only take you so far if what is going on internally is not being addressed.

And here is where it comes full circle. Many of the synthetic ingredients in conventional skincare, fragrances, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, can contribute to internal disruption when absorbed through the skin or inhaled over time. The products you are using to help your skin may actually be adding to the very imbalance making it harder to heal.

Everything is connected. That is not a wellness cliche. That is biology.

So Where Do You Start?

I am not here to tell you to throw everything out. That kind of overwhelm keeps most women from starting at all, and I understand that.

Start by flipping the bottle over. Look at what is first on the list. Ask whether each ingredient has a purpose or is just filling space.

Focus first on what you use most and what stays on your skin the longest. Your moisturizer. Your serum. Your body lotion. Those are the products your body is absorbing the most of every single day.

Look for waterless formulas where every ingredient earns its place. Look for products built around ingredients that have been studied and trusted rather than ones that exist simply to extend shelf life or improve texture at the expense of your health.

Small swaps over time lower the water level in your barrel. And that is where real change begins.
